Wind

Introduction to Wind Energy in India

Wind energy uses the power of moving air (wind) to generate electricity using wind turbines. India’s wind energy sector is one of the largest in the world, ranking fourth globally in installed capacity. The country has a strong domestic manufacturing base and a robust ecosystem for wind project development. Wind energy is clean, renewable, and helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels, contributing to a greener future.

Opportunities India is Working Towards in Wind Energy

  • Large Untapped Potential: India has a gross wind power potential of over 1163 GW at 150 meters above ground level, mainly in eight windy states (Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana).
  • Offshore Wind: India is exploring offshore wind projects, especially along the coasts of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, with government support for initial projects.
  • Manufacturing & Export: India’s wind turbine manufacturing capacity is about 18 GW per year, with increasing exports to global markets.
  • Hybrid Projects: Integration of wind with solar and battery storage for round-the-clock green energy supply.
  • Investment & Innovation: Reduced tariffs, favorable policies, and technological advancements are attracting domestic and foreign investments.

Key Government Initiatives Launched

  • Centralized Data Collection and Coordination (CCDC) Wind Initiative (2020): Improves wind resource assessment and supports project developers with accurate data.
  • National Wind Energy Mission: Targets 60 GW wind power capacity, with incentives like accelerated depreciation, generation-based incentives, and feed-in tariffs.
  • Viability Gap Funding (VGF) Scheme (2024): Rs. 7,453 crore approved for India’s first offshore wind projects (1 GW capacity) and port upgrades.
  • Green Energy Corridor: Integrates renewable energy into the national grid.
  • Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO): Mandates distribution companies to buy a certain percentage of power from renewables, including wind.

Major Projects Launched in the Past 3 Years

  • Capacity Additions: India’s wind power capacity surpassed 51 GW by May 2025, with Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka leading growth.
  • Offshore Wind Projects: 1 GW (500 MW each off Gujarat and Tamil Nadu) under VGF scheme, approved in 2024.
  • Integrated Wind and Solar Resource Assessment: Ongoing project by National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE), Chennai.
  • Met-Ocean Measurements: At Gulf of Khambhat and Gulf of Mannar for offshore wind feasibility.
  • Suzlon’s 3000 MW Wind Energy Mill: Collaboration with state government and new blade manufacturing facility in Vijayapura.
  • Hero Future Energies: Announced $20 billion investment plan to escalate capacity from 1.9 GW to 30 GW by 2030, focusing on wind, solar, and battery storage.
